Whether you are looking for a senior-living apartment for you or a family member, there are a few things you should take note of. Security and safety should take precedence over anything. If you are planning on moving somewhere because it's close to a shopping district, you should also be aware of the crime rate in that area. No matter how old you are, safety is a big concern and something that shouldn't be overlooked. When looking for a senior-living apartment, aside from your safety, there are other things you should consider as well. Read on for information to use as a guide when looking for a senior apartment.

1. Handicap Accessible

Accessibility is a big thing you should also consider. Even if you aren't handicapped at all, you could bump into a medical issue later down the road that could leave you or your loved one in a wheelchair or using a cane/walker. If this occurs and you're living in a building that isn't accessible, you could end up needing to live somewhere else. Be sure the apartment doesn't have steps or has lower floors that are handicap accessible just in case.

2. No Maintenance

Just because you can mow your lawn now doesn't mean you're going to be able to in a few years. Look for a place that doesn't have any lawn care, or shoveling to take care of. You need a place that doesn't require this type of maintenance. Doing this type of work as a senior citizen can result in severe injuries if you aren't careful. Be sure the apartment has maintenance-free care.

3. Good Location

A good location is one that is close to shopping, a hospital, and in a good neighborhood as well. A short distance to shopping is a good idea so you can get what you need or at least have it delivered to you. This is especially ideal if you no longer drive. Having a hospital nearby is also a good thing, so if you have an emergency you can get to the hospital quickly, or an ambulance can get to you take you to the hospital quickly.

If you're looking for a senior apartment for yourself or for someone you love, there are a few things you should consider before signing a rental contract. Be sure it's in a good location, and the neighborhood and complex are secure so you or your loved one stays safe.
