5 Lifestyle Considerations When Buying A New Home

When buying a house, it's important to give careful thought to not only your budget but how you live in your home. Your lifestyle should be a big factor in determining whether a property is right for you. Here are five things to consider when evaluating your potential future home.

1. Do You Enjoy Entertaining?

If you love having friends and family over for the holidays, a house with an eat-in kitchen and no separate dining room probably won't work for you. When your lifestyle revolves around entertaining, your home needs to be large enough to accommodate dinner parties, game nights, and ample space for guests to gather.

2. Do You Enjoy Extended Guests?

When your family lives nearby, they typically visit and then go back to their own residence at the end of the day. But if you live far from where your extended family lives, you may find yourself with frequent houseguests. If you expect regular visits from the in-laws, a guest bedroom will be most comfortable for everyone.

Look for a home that has a private space with an attached bathroom that is suitable for guests. The space should be large enough to accommodate a sleeping area as well as a comfortable place to relax and watch TV. This will allow guests to escape and get a bit of privacy. You could also consider properties that have separate guest houses or mother-in-law suites.

3. Do You Enjoy Cooking?

If you are a foodie who loves to cook, you're not likely to be happy in a small galley kitchen with outdated appliances and limited counter and cupboard space. You need a wide-open area with upscale appliances, a large island, and plenty of storage space for all your kitchen gadgets and gear. A separate pantry space is also ideal. When you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, you need a home that won't make that time frustrating.

4. Do You Enjoy Working From Home?

Working from home is likely to become more popular than ever thanks to COVID-19. Whether you are self-employed and have always worked from home, are new to it, or expect your company may transition in the future, you'll need a separate, dedicated workspace. If you routinely see clients, you may want a home office that has its own entrance as well.

5. Do You Enjoy the Outdoors?

If you love gardening, landscaping, or just soaking up the fresh air and sunshine, pay careful attention to the backyard space of any potential homes you tour. People often forget the outside as they excitedly walk through an open house. If you like being outside as much as you like being inside, you may want a yard that is large and private enough to do what you want to do.
